गिलोय की पत्तियों और तनों से सत्व निकालकर इस्तेमाल में लाया जाता है। गिलोय को आयुर्वेद में गर्म तासीर का माना जाता है। यह तैलीय होने के साथ साथ स्वाद में कडवा और हल्की झनझनाहट लाने वाला होता है।    गिलोय के गुणों की संख्या काफी बड़ी है। इसमें सूजन कम करने, शुगर को नियंत्रित करने, गठिया रोग से लड़ने के अलावा शरीर शोधन के भी गुण होते हैं। गिलोय के इस्तेमाल से सांस संबंधी रोग जैसे दमा और खांसी में फायदा होता है। इसे नीम और आंवला के साथ मिलाकर इस्तेमाल करने से त्वचा संबंधी रोग जैसे एग्जिमा और सोराइसिस दूर किए जा सकते हैं। इसे खून की कमी, पीलिया और कुष्ठ रोगों के इलाज में भी कारगर माना जाता है।  ताजे काण्ड की छाल हरे रंग की तथा गूदेदार होती है। उसकी बाहरी त्वचा हल्के भूरे रंग की होती है तथा पतली, कागज के पत्तों के रूप में छूटती है। स्थान-स्थान पर गांठ के समान उभार पाए जाते हैं। सूखने पर यही काण्ड पतला हो जाता है। सूखे काण्ड के छोटे-बड़े टुकड़े बाजार में पाए जाते हैं, जो बेलनाकार लगभग 1 इंच व्यास के होते हैं। इन पर से छाल काष्ठीय भाग से आसानी से पृथक् की जा सकती है।
